The study was carried out to investigate study habits and academic achievements of Junior Secondary School Students in Social studies in Ukanafun Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. Four research questions and four null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The Ex-post facto design was used. The sample of one hundred (100) students was used for the study which was selected using the simple random sampling techniques. The instrument for the study was the questionnaire. The data was analysed with the use of chi-square. Based on the analysis of the data collected in the study, the following findings were made; there is a significant influence on regular class attendance on study habits and academic achievement of Junior Secondary School Students. It was also discovered that there is a significant influence of note taking on study habits and academic achievement of Junior Secondary School Students.

The findings also reveal a significant influence of assignment on study habits and academic achievement of Junior Secondary School Students in Social Studies. The study also revealed that there is a significant influence of time allocation on study habits and academic achievement of Junior Secondary School Students in Social Studies. Lastly, the study ended with the following recommendations. Parents should be encouraged through P.T.A. meetings to support their children by creating a conducive learning environment at home. Parents should also be advised to reduce household jobs of children and running of errands during school days. Teachers should endeavour to regularly give an assignment to students. Teachers should ensure that their students are adequately taught on how to effectively use – time in studying.

Human life, which is the best creation of God, has got two aspects: the biological and sociological or cultural. While the former is maintained and transmitted by food and reproduction, the later is preserved and transmitted by education. it is again through education that he promotes his intelligence and adds his knowledge with which he can move the world for good and for evil according to his wishes. Education, in fact, is one of the major “life process” of the human beings, just as there is a certain indispensable vital process of life in a biological sense. So education may be considered a vital process in a social sense. Education is indispensable to normal living, without education the individual would be unqualified for group life (Safaya, et al 2016).

The world is becoming more and more competitive. Quality of performance has become the key factor for personal progress parent desire that their children climb the leader of performance to as high a level as possible. This desire for a high level of achievement puts a lot of pressure on students, teachers, and schools and in general the education system itself. In fact, it appears as if the world system of education revolves around the academic achievement of students, through various other outcomes are also expected from the system. Thus a lot of time and effort of the schools are used for helping students to achieve better in their scholastic endeavors. The importance of scholastic and academic achievement has raised important questions for educational researchers. What factors promote achievement in students? How far do the different factors contribute to academic achievement? (Ramaswamy, 2012). School achievement may be affected by various factors like intelligent, study habits, and attitudes of a pupil towards school, different aspects of their personality, socio –economic status, etc. The desire for success is derived from individual’s concepts of himself and the terms and meaning of various incentives as they spell success and the failure in the eye of others. Thus a child who sees himself as top ranking, as scholars, may set as his goal attainment of the highest grade in the class.

Many students do badly academically due to factors other than low intellectual capacity. One such factor is poor study habits, which often result in poor academic performance or achievement even among the naturally bright students. Habits are time indicators of individuality in a person. So study habits are the behaviour of an individual related to studies, which is adjudged from his study habit? In the process of learning, learner’s habitual ways of exercising and practicing their abilities for learning are considered as study habits of learners. The pattern of behaviours adopted by students in the pursuit of their studies is considered under the caption of their study habits. Study habits reveal students personality, learner’s character is characterized by his study habits. Study habits serve as the vehicle of learning. It may be seen as both means and ends of learning.

Study habits play a very important role in the life of students. Success or failure of each student depends upon his own study habits. Of course, the study is an art and as such it requires practice. Some students study more but they fail to achieve more success of each student definitely depends upon ability, intelligence, and effort of students. No doubt, regular study habits bring their own rewards in the sense of achievement of success.

Nwegbu (2009) asserted that habits saves time and saves effort. It is through the help of techniques that we carry out daily routines. Therefore good study techniques are important ingredients in the life of a successful student in his course of study. Since it helps students to accomplish task effectively and efficiently. Denga (2014) is of the opinion that such students should choose his suitable study techniques from the various study techniques because of individual differences since according to him, each student has his own goal in life and possesses his unique ways of pursuing these goals. A close examination of the factors that influence the academic achievement of student manifest and sacrifice are required for academic performance or achievement.

This means that a student study habit could be group discussion method of study, time allocation and assignment methods among others. It is observed that effective study techniques do not just happen, but acquired. As such, it has to go through mental processes before it can be established as a habit. Therefore, students who have developed good study techniques do not spend much time studying before they can attain success. On the contrary, those techniques make little or no success in their academic work. Bad or poor study habit make the process ink some and tedious, Swift (2012). Furthermore, whenever a student develops effective study techniques his learning skills memory processing strategies and his general test and examination performance are appreciably improved.

Apart from a high intellectual endowment, differences in academic achievement among students could be attributed to differences in study techniques. Some of the problems associated with study techniques include; inability to make use of the library facilities, lack of concentration capacity, poor examination technique, inability to share and contribute meaningfully to study group, poor time allocation, poor consultation with teachers, counselors and fellow students (Haye, 2009). This problem of the study group is a global one most students do not acknowledge they have poor study techniques. This is partly shown in the fallen standard of academic achievement in our educational institutions. Majority of the students complain about other factors being responsible for their poor academic achievement. They hardly complain about their study techniques. The result is parents and teachers are constantly in herbal warfare against others for the students’ poor academic performance and achievement (Robinson, 2013).

Bank (2010) observed that poverty has been seen for many years as a serious handicap to some students’ academic achievement. He further added that malnutrition and poor living condition are bound to influence the child’s health to learn, such deficiencies destabilize a students study techniques. In addition, students from poor homes are handicapped directly by higher rates of sickness and poor rate of attendance at school. That is to say that the type and nature of home environment into which a student is born, whether poor or rich, influence his mental health, hence affect his study habit as well as academic achievement in school. The classical approach to learning listed some advice and instructions on how students study, such as scheduling time for study, how to take notes on textbooks, and from lectures, how to read effectively and to pass examination, while some psychologist attempted to develop a number of study methods or techniques to help students adopt more effective study techniques to enhance academic achievement. Such techniques include; assignment, time allocation, study method and group study, and so on, (Denga, 2014).

These are the vision and reading speed etc., which may either be too fast or too slow, which may affect the rate of assimilation and comprehension and time can also influence the adoption of effective study techniques and academic performance or achievement. Vitro (2009) asserted that guide on study techniques change study techniques. The study further reveals that students exposed to study techniques gain insight and confidence which could be more lasting and appreciated than their knowledge of facts. In this study, the students who received the study habit techniques improved their academic achievement significantly than those with any study habit techniques.

Therefore, a child that form effective study habit is more likely to budget his time and learn easily, while a student that form bad study habit will not only allow his time wrongly, he will also procrastinate, create study problem and he may have difficulty adjusting in school (Haye, 2008).

It is therefore based on this premise that the researcher decides to embark on this study on study habits and academic achievement of secondary school students in Social Studies in Ukanafun Local Government Area.

The ability to study effectively is important for students success in any of the school subjects. Many capable students at all grade levels may experience frustration and even failure in many subjects, not because they lack ability, but because they do not have adequate study skills. Good study skills such as listening and reading, note-taking, managing time, taking tests, etc are not only capable of improving their academic achievement but also increasing their feelings of competence and confidence in their chosen subjects as they learn.

In recent time educators in Nigeria have been increasingly concerned about the need to improve on the academic achievement of students (Akubuiro, 2008). In the same vein, Akomolafe (2009) asserted that parents, teachers, and society, in general, are worried and apprehensive about the best way to improve academic standards, achievement, and performance. Consequently, the decline in the academic achievement of students in Nigerian secondary schools call for serious concern.

In our secondary school most students can only read and write but cannot think and reason logically and rationally, some can only be memorized and write in examination what the teacher has taught them. Some of the students do not have the required textbooks and writing materials. However, the students spent most of their time playing in the class, some discussing or distracting others when the lesson is going on, some are busy planning on what to do at home while in the classroom. Other students are unaware of various study techniques like group discussion, time allocation and other factors that could enhance their academic performance and achievement.

Students’ poor performance in Social Studies in Nigerian secondary schools and Akwa Ibom State, in particular, has continued to pose a serious concern to government, agencies, parents and the students themselves (Essien 2008). Most previous studies had tended to attribute this problem to factors that are extraneous to the learners, such as poor physical facilities, school environment etc. Various strategies adopted by different governments and agencies tend not to address the problem substantially. There is, therefore, further need to research into other possible factors or variables underlying students’ achievement in Social Studies since behaviour is a product of environmental and psychosocial variables.

It is as a result of this poor achievement experienced in the classroom by the researcher that gingered the researcher to carry out the present study which sought to investigate the influence of study habit on the academic achievement of secondary school students in Social Studies in Ukanafun Local Government Area.
