Abstract

Education as the key to development is saddled with the responsibility to upgrade teaching effectiveness among educators as well as learning efficiency among learners. Students learn in a variety of ways, and their ability to obtain this information also varies. That is to say, a student’s capacity to learn is impacted by the teacher’s approach of conveying information. Unfortunately, little attention has been given to how students think and learn. Therefore, in attempt to create this awareness or promote this knowledge by teachers, the research was, therefore, conducted to investigate the impact of on academic performance of science student offering biology in the secondary school in Ibiono Ibom.  A quasi-experimental research design was adopted in conducting the study. This design was considered most appropriate since the respondents were exposed to various learning styles. The population of the study consisted of public secondary schools of the study area.

The instrument used in collecting in this study was Biology Achievement Test (BAT). The instrument was structured such that both the control and treatment group had the same questions and equal marks attached to each question. Consequently, based on the findings, it was inferred that kinesthetic is an effective learning approach. Therefore, based on the findings the following recommendations were made: Firstly, Biology teachers should take into consideration the learning approaches of the students while planning their lesson so as to enhance the students’ academic performance. Secondly, School administrators should encourage Biology teachers to engage students in practical and classroom interactions. Thirdly, Governments should provide the school with well-equipped laboratories models and materials for the students to carry out experiments as the school management alone may not be able to cater for it. Finally, Teachers should take into consideration gender differences when using kinesthetic learning approach.

1.1       Background of the Study

Learning approach has been defined by various scholars mostly as a signal for individual differences. Consequently, these differences may manifest itself in “life approaches’ and even in personality types (Zhang and Sternberg 2005). Similarly, psychological attribute, resulting from individual differences, determine the particular strategies a person chooses while learning and also learning styles as cognitive, affective and psychological domains that serve as relatively stable indicators of how learners perceive, interact with, and respond to the learning environment. Moreover, Dunn and Dunn (2009) held that each individuals concentration on mental processes, internalization, and retention of new and difficult information arises from his specific learning approach.

Furthermore, learning approaches were found to affect learners’ learning behaviour. Thus, learners having different learning approach preferences would behave differently in the way they perceive interact and respond to the learning environment (Junko, 2009). Since learners differ in preferences to certain learning approaches, it will be important for teachers to examine the variations in their students on the features of their learning approaches. However, this is because the information about learning approaches could help teachers to become more sensitive to the differences in students attribute in the classroom (Felder and Spurlin, 2005). Some special students favour kinesthetic instruction, such as experiential, active and hands-on activity whereas many others are more auditory and visually oriented (Dunn, 2009). Adjustment can then be made to accommodate the students learning approach.
