This study was carried out to investigate the effects of teaching and learning materials on academic performance in secondary schools in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area. The specific purposes were to investigate the extent of availability utilization and accessibility of models and visual resources and teachers’ use of models and visual resources. Based on the stated objectives of the study, three research questions were formulated to guide the study. The study employed a survey research design in carrying out the study.
The population of the study was made up of all the students in the public at the senior secondary level in the Study Area. This was numbered was about three thousand five hundred and six science students offering biology in all the secondary schools in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area. The sample size for the study was one hundred students offering biology that were drawn from five selected secondary schools out of to form the sample size for the study. Simple random sampling techniques were adapted to conducts the study. The instrument used to gather the needed information for the study was the researcher’s made a questionnaire called “Models and Visual Resources and teaching of Biology Questionnaire (MVRTBQ). Data collected were analyzed using simple percentage.
Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendations were made: Government should make adequate budget through the ministry of education for the provision of models and visual resources to schools especially for a science-based subject like Biology. Educational stakeholders and donor bodies should also come to the aid of schools by providing models and visual resources. Teachers should be trained and retrained in order to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge in the use of models and visual resources in the classroom.
