Abstract

The research study was design to examine the causes of concord errors among Ibibio-English bilinguals. Five secondary schools in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State were used for the study. The population of the study comprised two hundred (200) students from the selected schools. A questionnaire, which contained fifteen (15) items, was used to collect data from the study. Simple percentage (%) was used as the statistical technique for data analysis. The study, however, revealed that lack of understanding of concord rules, the method of teaching adopted by the teacher in imparting the knowledge, skills and ideas to the learners as well as the influence of the language of the learners’ immediate environment can cause concord errors among Ibibio-English bilinguals. It was concluded that these factors to a great extent, cause concord errors among Ibibio-English bilinguals in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. Summary and recommendations were made. Some of the recommendations included that; Students should create enough time to learn English concord in order to understand the rules of the language. Teachers of English Language should always adopted proper teaching approaches in order to give the learners interest and motivation to learn and understand the language. Learners of English should make effort to suppress the influence of the language of their immediate environments so as to be able to master to proper usage of English language.
